Composed by Elie Siegmeister

Song Collection

In The Face of War, Siegmeister sets five texts of his collaborator and friend Langston Hughes. Siegmeister states, in the liner notes to the recording The Music of Elie Siegmeister: "We [Langston Hughes and Elie Siegmeister] wrote about fifty songs together, of which the two cycles Madam To You (1964) and The Face of War (1966) remain my favorites." According to The New York Times, The Face of War was written in protest of the Vietnam War. The work was orchestrated in 1967. --Christie Finn
