The Black Experience

Composed by David N. Baker
Text by Mari Evans

Song Collection

The Black Experience is a song cycle by David N. Baker setting the poetry of Mari Evans. The song cycle is currently out-of-print, but three of the songs, "Early in the Mornin,'" "Status Symbol," and "A Good Assassination Should Be Quiet," are included in Anthology of Art Songs by Black American Composers. "The Alarm Clock" is available in the 2021 anthology An Anthology of African and African Diaspora Songs. According to an expert on this cycle, Dr. Louise Toppin, the cycle is open-ended and the songs can be performed in various combinations, or excerpted as necessary, since the songs "are not thematically linked to tell a single narrative."
