Sidney Lanier

Southern poet Sidney Lanier was drawn to music as well as literature. He served in the Confederate Army and was captured and imprisoned, leading to tuberculosis that caused health problems for the rest of his life.

About
Lanier’s best-known poems are “The Song of the Chattahoochee,” “A Song of Love,” and “The Marshes of Glynn.”
His works are collected in a single volume, and have been set by American composers including George Chadwick, Charles Griffes, Grace W. Root, and, more recently, Bruce Trinkley.
