Joseph Hopkinson

Joseph Hopkinson was the son of Francis Hopkinson (who composed “My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free,” the first song to be acknowledged as “American”). Joseph Hopkinson graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and became a lawyer, setting in the Philadelphia area. He brought forth many important cases in the early days of the Supreme Court, including including Dartmouth College v. Woodward, Sturges v. Crowninshield and McCulloch v. Maryland.
