About

A native of New York City, Paul Goodman was immersed in city life from birth and completed his Ph.D. in literature at the University of Chicago. Writing essays, short stories and poetry prolifically, Goodman did not publish his first novel until 1942 (The Grand Piano).

Goodman’s great success came with Growing Up Absurd in 1960, and he became one of the seven founding members of the New York Institute for Gestalt Therapy. His radical political views and pacifism made him popular with the student generation in the 1960s.
