Arlo Bates

Arlo Bates was an educator and newpaper editor as well as poet and author.

About
Born in Maine, Bates graduated from Bowdoin College in 1876. He was editor of the Boston Sunday Courier from 1880 to 1893 and a professor of English at the Massachusetts Institute for Technology. Bates published several books of poetry and essays during his lifetime. His most significant work, The Torch Bearers, was written in 1894 to honor the centennial of Bowdoin College.
